5个人的追问

——2022白空间友好展

追问是艺术家的力量。艺术家的追问是其从日常生活的私人境遇中提炼出的深沉创作动机,而后外化为他们独特的美学实践。在此过程中,艺术家渴望体验当下现实的生存与生产条件,同时筹划着未来,编织出多彩的生存图景,这些便成为其内在必然性。线性或非线性的探询是一种进行时的、未完成的形式,也可以被称为艺术的目的与起源。
白空间秋季展将呈现的五位艺术家的作品展现了艺术家对如此这般现实条件的实践和追问的力量。色彩各异的五人一方面追问着不可避免的人类存在欲望及其起源,另一方面探寻着对人类生存状况的艺术性辩证反思,他们始终未曾退缩、停滞和消褪,以坚实的艺术实践应对着日常。
艺术家的本性是不去随波逐流,如今,他们继续着自己的艺术生活,以其独特的画法和语言展示他们简洁却不简单的艺术实践。望本次展览能够确证一种未被生存问题击垮,仍遵循着它本身创造性实践的艺术形式。
张强的双面书法与他对踪迹学理论的长期探索和研究以及艺术实验和实践并行相一致。同时也是对绘画自律性和纯粹性本质的追问,尤其是对绘画传统模式和当下绘画状况的考察和行为上的反思。
张翔不断地讨论自己的身份,在讯息和视觉印象过剩的时代通过网络搜索确认自己的存在,并以名片的形式追问自我身份。透过众多同名者各自不同的职业和类型了解百余人的情况,艺术家寻找着自我的本来、真实面目,继续着这一特殊的美学追问。
金泰俊通过对胎儿形象的生命体的描述追问人的存在。人从何而来又去往何处的命题以素描、影像和三维作品的方式呈现出来。像宿命,像作业,抑或困惑已久却必须解决的麻烦,既是难题,又是艺术实践的基本条件。
Gareth延续了一系列观念艺术,与熟人们一起完成了一年一度的行走。这是一场每年二月进行的全球化概念的集体行为艺术。本次展出的是他在中国重庆和日本大阪进行的行为艺术纪录。他的作品在偶然中辨识出日常生活的必然性以及生存领域内相互沟通的可能性,也是对社会契约的实践信任和可持续性的讨论。
白龙云表现了他律演算和可见/不可见的手工操作所定位的现实。算盘有其传统样式的特征。有形的角色位于特定的坐标上,重复有限的动作和行为,为未知之人的利益或游戏而忙碌并交付结果。规定的算法加减人物的命运,而他们为了生存只能忍受这些理性的运算,作品讽刺了被限制于固定日常状态的囚徒。
本次展览中包含了关于身份以及其他诸如我是谁,我们是什么,艺术家是谁,艺术是什么,作品是什么,艺术交流的可能性,艺术消费的盖然性,艺术的目的性等等问题。但这种发散的智性思考和实践意志既不是固定的,也不是基于惯性以获得独特且内在的艺术状态,而是五位同道艺术家对其创作动力进行不懈的艺术实践和审美反思的结果。

5 People's Questioning

——Bai Art Space 2022 Friendship Exhibition

Questioning, that is the power of artist. The artist's question is a heavy creative drive that one draws from his or her very personal conditions of daily life, and then externalized as that artist’s unique aesthetic practice. In this process, the artist is eager to encounter the current realistic living conditions and production conditions, planning for the future, and weaving a colorful living landscape, which becomes the inner inevitability of the artist. Linear or non-linear inquiry is a kind of in-the-process and unfinished form, which can also be said to be the purpose and origin of art.
The works of the five artists that will be presented in the White Space Autumn Exhibition, demonstrate the artist’s power to practice and question such and such realistic conditions. Five people with five colors are asking the inescapable human being's desire for existence and its origin, as well as an artistic dialectical reflection on the human beings’ conditions of living. Always unable to retreat, stagnate nor fade, with solid artistic practice corresponding to the daily.
The true nature of artists is not to follow the trend. Today, they continue their art life, showing artistic practice with their unique painting methods and language, which is simple but not easy. It is hoped that this exhibition can confirm that artistic form, which has not been defeated by survival issues, and adhere to its own creative practice.
Zhang Qiang's double-sided calligraphy corresponds to the long-term exploration and research of his trace theory, and to the parallel between artistic experimentation and practice. It is also an inquiry into the nature of painting's self-discipline and its purity. Especially as the investigation and behavioral reflection on the traditional mode of painting and the current situation of painting.
Zhang Xiang, who has been constantly discussing his own identity, confirming his existence through online search in the age of information and visual impression excess, and asking about the self-identity in the form of business card. Seeing various types and occupations of many people with the same name, getting to know the results of over hundred people, the artis is looking for the very original of me, what the real me is like, he continues to ask these special aesthetic questions.
Kim Tae-joon questioned the existence of human beings through the description of the living body in the image of fetus. The question of where people come from and where they go is presented in the form of sketches, videos, and three-dimensional works. It is like fate, like homework, or troubles that cannot be solved for a long time yet must be solved, as difficult problems are also the basic conditions for artistic practice.
Gareth continued a series of conceptual art, performing an annual walk with acquaintances. It is a collective performance art on the concept of glocalization that takes place every February. The work on display here are records of his performance art performed in Chongqing, China, and Osaka, Japan. The work recognizes the inevitability of everyday life by chance, the possibility of mutual communication in the realm of existence, and it is the discussion of practical trust and sustainability of the social contract.
Bai Longyun expresses the reality that has been positioned by heteronomy calculus and visible/invisible manual operations. The abacus has its own characteristics of traditional style. The tangible characters are located on specific coordinates, repeating limited movements and behaviors, being busy for the unknown people’s interests or games, and deliver the results. The prescribed algorithm adds and subtracts the characters’ fate, these rational operations can only be endured for the sake of survival, which satirizes the prisoners locked in a fixed daily state.
In the exhibition, there are questions about identity, and other exitential questions about who I am, what we are, who the artist is, as well as question like what is art, what is work, the possibility of artistic communication, the probability of consumption of art, and the purposiveness of art, etc. But such radiant intellectual thinking and practical will are neither fixed nor based on inertia to obtain the unique and inherent artistic state. It is the result of the persistent artistic practice and aesthetic reflection of the creative driving force of the five fellow artists.

/关于策展人 About Curator

| 朴天男 Tcheon-Nahm PARK |


朴天男
1961 年出生于韩国首尔。
他在韩国弘益大学获得了艺术学士学位和艺术硕士学位, 并完成了美学专业的博士课程。
他1992 年在三星文化艺术基金会旗下的湖岩美术馆(现在的三星美术馆LEEUM) 开始策展职业生涯, 同时担任多个职位, 如罗丹美术馆的策展人(1997), 首尔市立美术馆的首席策展人(2004), 釜山市立美术馆的首席策展人(2007), 省谷美术文化基金会旗下的省谷美术馆的首席策展人(2009), 城南文化基金会旗下的城南CUBE美术馆的首席策展人(2015)。
他担任过第二届杨平环境美术节Eco of Echo展(2009, 韩国杨平)的艺术总监, 第二届宽度双年展的韩国单元策展人(2010, 台北), 第二届重庆青年双年展的韩国单元策展人(2011, 重庆)。
迄今为止,他已经策划了大约100个大大小小的展览,包括来自四川发(2016)和北京发(2017)展览。
目前, 朴天男是一名独立策展人和美术评论家, 同时也是韩国策展人委员会的名誉主席。朴天男总是以审慎的眼光而非走马观花地去理解当代艺术, 并关注当代艺术那些被忽视的价值。




Tcheon-Nahm PARK
1961 born in Seoul, Korea.
Received his B.A. and M.A. Degree in the Science of Arts and finished his ph.D course in Aesthetics at Hong-ik University, Seoul, Korea.
1992 Began his career as a Curator at Ho-Am Art Museum(now LEEUM, Samsung Museum of Art) of the Samsung Foundation of Culture and held various number of positions, such as Associate Curator at RODIN Gallery (1997), Senior Curator at Seoul Museum of Art (2004), and Chief Curator at Busan Museum of Art (2007), Chief Curator at Sungkok Art Museum of the Sungkok Art and Culture Foundation (2009), Seoul, Korea, and Chief Curator at Seongnam Cube Art Museum of Seongnam Cultural Foundation (2015).
PARK was an Artistic Director for Eco of Echo (2009, Yangpyong, Korea), a Curator for the Korea Section of the 2nd Kuandu Biennale (2010, Taipei, Taiwan), and the 2nd Chongqing Biennale for Young Artists (2011, Chongqing, China).
He has curated more than 100 various exhibitions so far, including Lives and Works in Sichuan (2016), Lives and Works in Beijing (2017).
Currently, He is an Independent Curator, Art Critic and a Honorary President at Korean Curator’s Association, Seoul, Korea.
PARK perceives Contemporary Art with an acknowledgement of neglected values, and an eye of slowness rather than fleetness.

张强

现为中国省部级专家“两江学者”终身荣誉(2013—),四川美术学院二级教授(2020-),“卓越艺术人才计划”(2020-2023),校学术委员会委员(2002—),世界实验书法高等研究中心主任(2021-)。中国教育部人文社科项目评审专家,重庆市艺术美学学会副会长,英国南安普顿大学温切斯特艺术学院客座教授。


著有“张强艺术学体系”六十卷(已出版27卷),2013年由文化艺术出版社开始出版;

2002 为伦敦大英博物馆首位当代艺术表演者(2002);

2018 在英国泰特现代美术馆首开个人工作坊(2018);

2012 系意大利威尼斯拉古纳大展“艺术机构特别奖”得主(与Lia WEl合作2012);

2015与2020年 《库艺术》2015与2020年度艺术人物;

2016 《亚洲艺术》2016年度艺术人物。




Qiang ZHANG

Qiang ZHANG is now a lifelong honor of "Liangjiang Scholars" (2013 -), a provincial and ministerial expert in China, a second class professor of Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts (2020 -), a member of the Academic Committee of the University (2002 -), and a director of the World Experimental Calligraphy Advanced Research Center (2021 -). Reviewer of the Humanities and Social Sciences Program of the Ministry of Education of China, Vice President of Chongqing Society of Art Aesthetics, Visiting Professor of Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, UK.
He has written 60 volumes of "Zhang Qiang's Artistic System" (27 volumes have been published), which was published by the Culture and Arts Publishing House in 2013;

2002 was the first contemporary art performer at the British Museum in London (2002);

In 2018, the first personal workshop was held in Tate Modern Art Museum (2018);

2012 was the winner of the "Special Award for Art Institutions" at the Laguna Exhibition in Venice, Italy (in cooperation with Lia WEl in 2012);

2015 and 2020 Art Figures in 2015 and 2020;

2016 Asian Art 2016 Artist of the Year.

张翔

1982年生于四川省达州市。

2007年毕业于四川美术学院雕塑系,获学士学位。

2009年前往荷兰海牙自由视觉艺术学院交换留学。

2010年毕业于四川美术学院雕塑系,获硕士学位。

2010年至2013年入驻坦克库?重庆当代艺术中心。

2014年至今任教于四川美术学院造型艺术学院雕塑系。


张翔立足中国现场,从生活日常中汲取营养,把传统记忆与当代视角融合统一,通过不断探索与实践,逐步形成独具个人特色的当代艺术样式。《木?奇》系列作品成为其代表作品。在此基础上,他不断打破雕塑概念的疆界,组织艺术团体策划并参与跨媒介雕塑实践,立足现实,扎根生活,呼吸未来,发现可能。作品曾在北京、上海、武汉、深圳、重庆、成都、台北、首尔、海牙、佛罗伦萨等等多个城市展出,部分作品被国内外艺术机构所收藏。




Xiang ZHANG

Xiang ZHANG was born in Dazhou City, Sichuan Province in 1982.
He graduated from Sculpture Department of Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 2007 with a bachelor's degree.
In 2009, he went to the Free Visual Arts Institute in The Hague, the Netherlands to exchange and study abroad.
He graduated from Sculpture Department of Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 2010 with a master's degree.
From 2010 to 2013, it was settled in the Tank Farm ? Chongqing Contemporary Art Center.
Since 2014, he has taught in Sculpture Department of Plastic Arts College of Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts.
Xiang ZHANG bases himself on the Chinese scene, absorbs nutrition from daily life, integrates traditional memory and contemporary perspective, and gradually forms a unique contemporary art style through constant exploration and practice. The series of Mu · Qi became his representative works. On this basis, he constantly broke the boundaries of sculpture concepts, organized art groups to plan and participate in cross media sculpture practice, based on reality, rooted in life, breathed the future, and found possibilities. His works have been exhibited in Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Chengdu, Taipei, Seoul, The Hague, Florence and other cities, and some of his works have been collected by domestic and foreign art institutions.

Gareth Jones

Gareth Jones is a British artist, researcher and educator living in Japan. While trained in drawing and painting, in recent years his work has moved away from representational modes towards an approach that is more relational, embracing Nicolas Bourriaud’s proposition of “encounters not forms”1. Gareth uses a variety of methods to explore material, spatial, textual and visual encounter. Walking has become a primary method in this practice and he situates his perambulations in relation to a number of traditions including the psychogeography of the European Situationists, Japanese artist Akasegawa Gempei, and the Tokyo-based Street Observation Society. Much of the visual material included in the current piece, Three Voids that Exist, emerged out of his walking encounters in the streets and spaces of his home in Osaka. The disjointed narrative embedded within the sequence of images was also formulated during his many urban dérives.

HE was born in 1972,Kaiyuan, Shenyang Province, China.

1992——1997 : studied in the department of sculpture, Lu Xun Fine Arts Institute, Shenyang, China.
1998——2003 : studied about the sculpture abstract in Yokohama National University. 2005——current : I stay in Chongqing, worked in my own studio.
